HB 99 - Medical Malpractice Changes - Passes the House
HB 99 represents a practical solution driven policy the kind of policy that meets a real and urgent need in our state.
This legislation is not symbolic. It delivers meaningful benefits for all New Mexicans and strengthens the healthcare system.
New Mexico is in the middle of a severe healthcare crisis. Providers across the state, especially in high risk specialty and rural areas are stretched thin.
Too many communities have long wait times shrinking provider list and diminishing access to essential care and lawmakers from both chambers have finally acknowledged the truth that our malpractice environment is part of the problem.
It is not about shielding bad actors. It's about ensuring a system that is stable, functional and capable of serving those who rely on it most
Nothing prevents patients who have been harmed from seeking justice. The bill clarify standards, tightens, definitions, and ensures a fair balance between patient rights and a workable healthcare environment.
Physicians have told us for years that medical malpractice is a major problem and today we are listening to their calls for fair and balance reform.
I want to thank everyone who has worked with us on this issue. And I want to thank the hundreds of doctors and patients who have advocated tirelessly over the years to get us here.
The bill is now going to the Senate and I hope they can get it over the finish line on behalf of all of our constituents that we serve.
